In front of the temple is a small roofless structure called the
Purgatorium. It contained a staircase down to an underground room
containing a water tank. This probably contained water from the Nile
river, since it is known that the head priests of Isis temples made a
yearly pilgrimage to Egypt during which they obtained a supply of sacred
water form the Nile. The exact use of this water in Isis rituals is not
known.
