This is a view from the large room at the back of the temple
compound into the portico surrounding the temple. It illustrates the
easy flow of spaces that characterize this phase of Pompeiian
architecture. Some architectural historians argue that early imperial
Roman architects were not so much interested in the structure of the
buildings they created as they were in such things as the
interconnection of spaces, dramatic lines of sight, and the movement
of people as they performed the functions for which the spaces were
intended. Though this is an interesting argument, it is one that
probably will never be resolved.
